Deputy Minister Phaahla devotes time for senior citizens

As part of the National Older Persons Week, the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Joe Phaahla will give a special address to senior citizens under the theme “The future we want, what older persons say".

This year’s theme emphasises the importance of involving older persons in decision-making and development of policies that affect them. The occasion will take place on Thursday, 3 October 2013 at Freedom Park in Pretoria.

Declared by the United Nations in 1990, the International Day for Older Persons is held annually on 1 October to acknowledge and celebrate the role played by our the elders in society.

President Jacob Zuma launched the National Older Persons Week ahead of International Day on 29 September 2013. The week will be observed until 6 October 2013. This is to re-affirm that older persons are an integral part of this country.

The department has invited 300 senior citizens to a tour in Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park to experience and explore the heritage of South Africa. Lastly, the elders will also be charmed by the sounds of the renowned gospel singer, Rebecca Malope.

As we mobilise the nation towards 20 years of Freedom and Democracy celebrations, the Government acknowledges the selfless contribution and sacrifice of our veterans during the liberation struggle. Through our programmes we remain committed to social cohesion and nation building.
