Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete officiates handover ceremony of Colesberg Bulk Water Supply Scheme, 16 Oct

The Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pamela Tshwete, will officiate at the handover ceremony of the R153 million Colesberg Bulk Water Supply Scheme to the Umsobomvu Local Municipality.

The project includes the construction of a 25 kilometer pipeline abstracting water from the Orange River to Colesberg, a new river abstraction works, a new pump station with complete civil, mechanical, electrical and electronic works, as well as the upgrading and extension of the existing Colesberg Water Treatment Works.

The implementation of this water project will ensure that the communities of Colesberg, Noupoort and Norvalspond bid the previous discomfort of water shortages goodbye.

Access to sustainable water supply and dignified sanitation are South African Constitutional rights. The people of Umsobomvu Local Municipality must enjoy these benefits exactly the same as anyone else in the country.

The main aim of this critical piece of infrastructure is to speak to the eradication of any existing water backlogs and to ensure sustainable water services to all of the approximately 4 773 households accommodating 17,259 persons in the municipal jurisdiction of Colesberg at least until 2030.

It is further envisaged that the scheme will assist with the eradication of the backlogs of sanitation services especially with the possibility of access to water-borne sanitation.
The day’s activities will include the official opening of the Colesberg Water Treatment Works, a brief visit to benefitting households (i.e. recently reticulated), as well as a community event.

Whilst the community is invited to the event at the Colesberg Sports Ground, there will be media opportunities both at the Treatment Works and at the Sports Ground.

Details of the day are as follows:

Date: 16 October 2015
Time: 10h00
Venue: Colesberg Sports Grounds
