Deputy Minister Nomaindiya Mfeketo leads South African delegation to BRICS meeting in Russia, 22 May

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Nomaindiya Mfeketo, will represent South Africa at the BRICS Deputy Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting to be held in Moscow, Russian Federation, on 22 May 2015. The Russian Federation will host the meeting in its capacity as BRICS Chair.

The meeting is convened to discuss matters relating to the Middle East and North Africa. It will be the second meeting dedicated to Middle East and North Africa issues to be held by the BRICS Deputy Foreign Affairs Ministers.

Developments in the Middle East and North Africa were first addressed by the Leaders of BRICS at the Third BRICS Summit held in Sanya in the People’s Republic of China in 2011. Subsequently, a meeting of Deputy Ministers on Middle East and North Africa developments was arranged and held in Moscow on 24 November 2011.

The consultation amongst the Deputy Ministers is being held in preparation for the VII BRICS Summit, which will take place in Ufa, in the Russian Federation, on 8 and 9 July 2015. The meeting will also serve to further strengthen BRICS consultations on global issues of mutual interest. Cooperation between the BRICS has deepened over the past year in a number of areas identified at the annual Summits.
