Deputy Minister Mimmy Gondwe engages private higher education institutions in a nationwide collaboration drive, 8 to 10 Jun

Deputy Minister for Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, will lead sector-wide engagements with private higher education institutions from Monday, 8 June 2026.

The engagements aim to strengthen relations and drive collaboration to address pressing challenges in the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector, including expanding access for all students, creating a business-friendly environment for private investment in education, and fostering innovation and responsiveness to labour market needs.

Deputy Minister Gondwe oversees Private Higher Education Institutions and has effectively promoted legislative compliance through the intergovernmental Bogus Colleges Awareness Campaign.

This effort ensures that private colleges are registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and offer programmes accredited by national quality assurance bodies such as the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), the Quality Council for Trades & Occupations (QCTO), and the Council on Higher Education (CHE).

The sector-wide engagements aim to recognise and collaborate with legitimate, fully registered institutions that contribute positively to the PSET sector.

“The conversation can no longer be about whether private higher education institutions have a role to play; that question has long been settled; the focus now is on collaborating more effectively and responsibly to ensure that higher education supports national development and inclusive economic growth,” said Deputy Minister Gondwe.

Deputy Minister Gondwe also highlighted that private higher education institutions can significantly contribute to developing institutions that produce graduates with the skills required by the modern digital economy.

Engagement schedule:

  • Monday, 8 June 2026 – ADvTECH (Rosebank International College)
  • Monday, 8 June 2026 – Associations: SAPHE, APPETD, SABSA & other private higher education associations
  • Wednesday, 10 June 2026 – Regent Business School, STADIO, Eduvos & The Da Vinci Institute
