Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to launch the R12 million working for the coast project during World Oceans Day celebrations in Eastern Cape

The Deputy Minister for Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will launch the R12 million Working for the Coast project during the World Oceans Day celebrations on Monday, 10 June 2013, in Port St Johns, Eastern Cape.

World Oceans Day (WOD) is celebrated annually on 8 June; it aims to raise awareness of the role of oceans and the importance of conserving and protecting our marine environment. It has been coordinated internationally by the Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network with global participation since 1992. It was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008, and South Africa has celebrated it every year ever since.

This year’s theme is "Ocean as a cradle of life: Together we have the power to protect the Ocean".

As part of the celebrations the Deputy Minister will launch the R12 million Working for the Coast project which will be implemented in three coastal municipalities: King Sabatha Dalindyebo, Nyandeni and Port St Johns as of 1 July 2013. She will also announce the Oceans and Coasts’ initiatives on; Shark Solutions Experiments and Feasibility of Tidal Pool.

WOD will be used to showcase the distinctive work the Department of Environmental Affairs is doing in the preservation of our oceans and coasts as well as the creation of job opportunities.
