The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, MP, will award water competition prizes to youth for best water conservation innovations at the closing ceremony of the Youth Water Summit, on 5 July 2013, in Birchwood hotel, Boksburg.
The announcement of the water competition prizes is a culmination of a week-long intensive educational programme for young people where they engaged in various exciting activities such as excursions, public speaking, debates and national competitions.
The Deputy Minister will award the innovative water competition prizes in the following categories:
- Baswa le Meetse (Youth in Water) - This competition-based project targets Grade six learners and conveys health and hygiene messages through medium of art, i.e. drama, traditional music, poetry, praise singing and posters.
- South African Youth Water Prize (SAYWP) - Learners between Grade 9 and 11 are engaged in identifying problems and develop inventions and awareness projects to solve them. The project serves as an incubator for the Water Affairs Learning Academy.
- Aqua-Enduro - The core business of the programme is issues of drinking water quality. The aim is to develop an interest in learners who are between Grade eight and 11 to pursue careers in the water sector.
- Public Speaking – Target learners between Grades 10 and 11 learners and focuses on raising awareness about the impact of Climate Change on water resources.
