Deputy Minister John Jeffery to officially launch Mitchells Plain Small Claims Court

As part of the strategic objective in ensuring that everyone has access to justice, Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD), John Jeffery, will officially open the Mitchells Plain Small Claims Court.  The Deputy Minister has recently appointed eight Small Claims Courts Commissioners who will be sworn in, during the launch, at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, 30 April 2014.

This will be the 28th established Small Claims Court in the province. Currently there are 353 Commissioners serving the province in 44 magisterial districts including Cape Town, Bellville, Wynberg, the Cape Winelands, the West Coast and Knysna, amongst others. Seventeen Small Claims Courts are still to be established across the province.

Small Claims Courts are for minor civil claims through a simple, cost effective and speedy process. People can for the first time claim for an amount not exceeding R15 000 as an increase in the jurisdiction of the Small Claims Court was Gazetted on 1 April 2014.
