Deputy Minister John Jeffery addresses “I Serve Equally” LGBTI Awareness Campaign, 9 Nov

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery, MP, will deliver a keynote address at the launch of “I Serve Equally” Campaign in Atteridgeville, Pretoria West on Monday, 9 November 2015.

The “I Serve Equality” campaign aims to raise awareness to the social challenges experienced by Lesbians Gay Bi-sexual Transgender and Inter-sex (LGBTI) persons. The campaign is an initiative of a Non-Governmental Organisation called Access Chapter 2 and is supported by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.

During the launch, Deputy Minister Jeffery will also interact with the family of Lesego Manganye who committed suicide earlier this year after being gang raped twice because of her sexuality.

Last year, the department launched the LGBTI Programme which aims to promote partnership amongst government, civil society, business and the media in the fight against gender based violence and to encourage communities to report such crimes.

This followed the work of the National Task Team (NTT) which was set up in 2011 to develop a National Intervention Strategy that will be used as a guide to clamp down violence against LGBTI persons.
