Background of the Skills Programme

The programme is a partnership between EPWP and The Agricultural Sector Education and Training Authority (AgriSETA) and forms part of the celebration of the Eastern Cape 2015 EPWP month. The Eastern Cape Provincial government has since 2004 dedicated September to be EPWP month.

The objective of the programme, which is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training through the National Skills Fund, is to develop skills of the youth in agriculture in the Eastern Cape.

The EPWP is one of government’s initiatives that are aimed at providing short to medium term work and training opportunities for the poor and unemployed. EPWP uses labor-intensive methods to deliver services and goods that contribute to the development of communities.

The National Certificate in Mixed Farming is one of many EPWP training programmes implemented in South Africa. Since 2010, EPWP has provided close to 30 000 people with training opportunities in various trades of artisan, learnerships, skills programmes and short courses.
