Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu unveils computer laboratory at Sizwile School for the Deaf, 8 Jun

A computer laboratory is opening at Sizwile School for the Deaf in Soweto

As the country commemorates youth month under the theme: “Live the legacy: Towards a socio-economic empowered youth”, access to quality education remains a critical tool for addressing youth empowerment.

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, in partnership with MTN SA Foundation, will be unveiling a computer laboratory at Sizwile School for the Deaf in Dobsonville, Soweto on 8 June 2018.

This handover marks a long-standing Public Private Partnership between the Department of Social Development and the MTN SA Foundation. The aim of the partnership is to address the issue of a lack of technologically-advanced and user-friendly educational equipment in schools to assist learners with special needs.

Each of the gadgets in the computer laboratory comprises specialised programmes that are responsive to the special needs of disabled learners.

Sizwile School for the Deaf was identified8 as one of the 40 South African schools which will be receiving such facilities in 2018. Established in 1978, the school educates 272 learners between the ages of 3 and 18 years. Eighty three of these children stay in a hostel on the school premises.

Noluthando School for the Deaf in Khayelitsha, Western Cape and the Sedibeng Special School in Lephalale, Limpopo are the most recent beneficiaries of the partnership between the Department and the MTN SA Foundation.
