The Deputy Minister for Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will lead a disability march to the Union Buildings tomorrow, December 3, to mark the end of the Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) campaign.
Gauteng Premier, Mr David Makhura, and Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Ms Molebatsi Bopape, will also join the march.
December 3 is International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
The DRAM campaign has been undertaken under the theme “Celebrating 60 years of the Freedom Charter, South Africa – a free and just society inclusive of all persons with disabilities as equal citizens”, and has sought to promote the human and socio-economic rights of persons with disabilities. The march aims to show support for people with disabilities.
The march will depart from Wessels Street, Pretoria Museum in Arcadia Park to the Union Buildings from 10h00 in the morning. Thereafter an event will be hosted to commemorate International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
The march will also serve to encourage all South Africans to support the 16 Days for No Violence against Women and Children campaign which runs from 25 November until 10 December as well as promote the Department’s Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC).
The GBVCC is a 24-hour call centre dedicated to providing support and counselling to victims of gender-based violence. The toll-free number to call for assistance is 0800 428 428 (0800 GBV GBV). Callers can also request a social worker from the Command Centre to contact them by dialling *120*7867# (free) from any cell phone.
