Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu launches District Men’s Parliaments in West Rand, 25 Jul

Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu will on 25 July 2019, launch the District Men’s Parliaments in Randfontein, Gauteng Province. The launch by the Department of Social Development is in partnership with the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) Men’s Sector and the West Rand District Municipality - as part of the Takuwani Riime Men’s Movement which supports the Department’s Men Championing Change programme.

The programme seeks to encourage men and boys to play a role in the prevention of HIV, gender-based violence and other social ills.

The Department and the Takuwani Riime Men’s Movement will be conducting Men’s Parliaments in all 52 Districts in the current financial year.

These District Men’s Parliaments are as a result of the successful National Men’s Parliament which was held in Cape Town on 19 November 2018.

The District Men’s Parliaments will provide a public participation platform for men and boys to engage and discuss issues regarding the men’s responses to adverse social conditions and for them to take accountability for their contribution in resolving social challenges affecting communities.

The District Men’s Parliaments will be hosted under the theme “Institutionalising a Responsive Men’s Movement”. The 25th of each month was declared Orange Day by the United Nations Women in 2009. Orange Day aims to mobilise communities, civil society, activists, governments and the UN system to UNiTE to end Violence against Women and Girls.

Individuals around the world are encouraged to wear a touch of orange in solidarity with the cause. The orange colour symbolises a brighter and a world free from violence against women and girls.

The Executive Mayor of the West Rand District, Mr. Diteko Moreotsenye, will join Deputy Minister together with Dr. Sandile Buthelezi the CEO of the SANAC, Dr. Matome Kganakga who is the Deputy Chairperson of SANAC Men’s Sector and Mr. Boitshepo Lesetedi from the West Rand District Municipality Men’s Sector.
