Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu to acknowledge the importance of families in society
The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will be hosting a two-day summit to emphasise the importance of families from 30 – 31 May 2018 at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Gauteng.
The summit will be held to celebrate International Day of Families (IDF) which was commemorated globally on 15 May under the theme “Families and Inclusive Societies”. The 2018 annual observance of IDF will explore the role of families and family policies in advancing sustainable development.
The focus will also be on current and prospective family policies that can ensure the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the areas of reduction of poverty and social exclusion, work-family life balance, gender equality and the promotion of social cohesion.
The department will be engaging with members of the community and various stakeholders on how families can be strengthened.
Key note speakers from non-profit organisations will include Mr Zibuse Kunene from Dads in the Picture and Ms Carol Keyzer from Mighty Wings Life Centre.
Commemoration of IDF coincides with Child Protection Week which will be officially closed in Ladybrand, Free State on 03 June. Now in its 21st year, the Child Protection Week campaign is observed under the theme “Let us All Protect Children to Move South Africa forward” and focuses on encouraging South Africans to protect and care for children as important members of the family.
During the IDF summit, the various forms of support that children should be receiving will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the various types of families that exist within our communities and the form of niche support they need.
