Deputy Minister Bheki Cele leads the Mandela Day Legacy Project in Piet Retief, 17 Jul

Together we move South Africa forward-the Mandela legacy lives on  "General Cele's marathon to alleviate hunger and starvation benefits the vulnerable households of Saul Mkhizeville"

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, General Bheki Cele, is positioning the department in the “state of business unusual” by embarking on a multi-pronged approach in speedily addressing the fundamental priorities of food security, job creation and economic growth.

The Deputy Minister will lead the Mandela Day Legacy Project aimed at honouring Madiba in a significant and sustainable manner. "Honouring Mandela legacy can be more meaningful if South Africa can significantly reduce the number of 14 million people who go to bed without food,” said Cele.

It is on that score that the focus of Mandela Day is on household and community gardens. In line with the concept of 67 minutes of community work, 67 households will benefit from household gardens at Saul Mkhizeville, together with identified community projects, including the 24-hour clinic. The households will further receive garden tools, school uniform, blankets and food parcels.

The Deputy Minister will further hand over 700 trees at Mkhondo Municipality as part of the Legacy Project for the upcoming World Forestry Congress.
