Deputy Minister Nel to officiate at the graduation ceremony of the CWP participants

The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) will be attending the graduation ceremony of 16 Community Work Programme  (CWP).

In response to the persistent and structural nature of unemployment, government established public employment programmes (PEPs) like the Community Work Programme (CWP). Government places high priority to PEPs and this is shown in their increased funding.

Like the PEPs, CWP is part of government plans aimed at addressing the triple challenges faced by the country, namely, poverty, inequality and unemployment. To this effect, participants are recruited from poor households into the programme to do useful work for community development. Some of the useful work entailed providing support to disadvantaged schools where the CWP participants cleaned the classrooms and assisted in teaching when the need arose.

Some of the CWP participants have matric and to this effect, a partnership was established with the University of North West to train them on Grade R Teaching Diploma. Sixteen (16) of these participants have successfully completed the three year Grade R Diploma on record time.

The graduation and continued funding of CWP participants to improve their lives clearly illustrate government’s commitment to ending poverty.
