Deputy Minister Nel and Executive Mayor Pakati to Lead Visit to Mercedes Benz Plant

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Deputy Minister Andries Nel; Buffalo City Executive Mayor Councillor Xola Pakati; President of the United Cities Local Government Association, Councillor Parks Tau; and key delegates attending the BRICS sectoral meetings will tomorrow – 29 June 2018 – visit the Mercedes Benz Plant in East London as part of the conference Day 2 programme to showcase the city’s economic development projects.

The German car maker has recently announced its plans to invest R10 billion in the expansion of their assembling plant which is set to boost the economy of the city.

The Journalists who are accredited to cover the BRICS event and wish to be part of the visit are requested to send through their RSVP by Friday, 29 June 2018,10h00 for logistical arrangements. Transportation for journalists, from the ELICC to the site, will be made available upon request.

The discusssions of the CoGTA BRICS Sectoral Meetings Day 2 will focus on the following topics which will all take place at the East London ICC ahead of the Mercedese Benz visit:

New Urban Agenda and the Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals ( Moderated by SAPI President Nthato Minyuku).

BRICS City Lab and Smart Cities and City Governance as Centres for Innovation in an Inclusive Knowledge Economy (Moderated by Nelson Mandela Bay City Manager, Mr Johann Mettler).

This 4-day event has two planned gala dinner sessions, one taking place tonight hosted by the CoGTA Deputy Minister Andries Nel and another taking place tomorrow night, hosted by the Buffalo City.

The BRICS Sectoral Meetings are a precursor to the main BRICS Summit which will be hosted by South Africa and attended by the heads of member states from 25 – 27 July 2018 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.
