Deputy Minister Nel to preside over handover and reburial ceremony of the exhumed remains of Thabo Mosala
The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel, will on Saturday, 31 May 2025, preside over a solemn and historic handover and reburial ceremony of the exhumed remains of political activist Thabo Mosala in Matatiele, Eastern Cape.
This ceremony forms part of the Department’s efforts to implement the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which aim to bring closure to the families of those whose lives were lost due to political activities during the apartheid government.
Thabo Mosala’s case is one of many suspicious deaths in detention during the apartheid era, often officially attributed to “natural causes” without proper investigation. The TRC documented several such cases and recommended further inquiries.
His unwavering stance against the sham “independence” of Transkei and the injustice of ethnic fragmentation speaks to his commitment to a united, democratic South Africa. His life, and the unresolved questions around his death, continue to inspire ongoing efforts for truth, justice, and accountability in post-apartheid South Africa.
