The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) and the Umjindi Local Municipality, will join hands to educate the young people of Barberton and surrounding areas about the adverse effects of liquor abuse and entrepreneurship.
The event will take place at the Phase 2 Sports Grounds in eMjindini, Barberton on Friday, 20 June 2014 from 10h00. The event is part of a Youth Month Campaign initiated by the dti to create awareness among the country’s young people on the adverse effects of liquor abuse.
The theme of this year’s Youth Month Campaign is “Working Together for Youth Development and a Drug Free South Africa”. It calls for social and community mobilisation in support of youth development but also working with youth and their organisations, in fighting drug abuse.
The campaign is also aimed at empowering the youth to participate in the mainstream economy, encouraging them to develop their skills, and raising awareness about the negative behavioural activities related to liquor abuse, such as violence, murder, drunken driving, promiscuity, sexual offences and the spread of HIV/Aids, school truancy, and abuse of children and women.
Various government agencies tasked with providing financial and non-financial support to small businesses in particular, will be at hand to provide information to the young people on how they can access their products and services in order to establish their own businesses or grow them and make these businesses sustainable if they already have them.
