After the untimely death of Mr. Dick Nkuna, the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation wishes to honour the memory of Mr. Nkuna by renaming two (2) of its sport facilities to carry on his name and legacy.
Mr. Nkuna was a stalwart in sport administration in the Free State Province and the country. The impact he had on sport in the country, and in the Free State as a province, cannot be underestimated. His influence and love for sport will be greatly missed indeed.
Before taking up the position as manager of Boxing South Africa in the Free State, Mr. Nkuna served as football manager of Welkom Real Hearts and Welkom Stars. He also held the prestigious position as president of South African Football Association (SAFA): Free State Northern Region.
The work done in the various positions he held cannot be measured, as the contribution he made was only exceeded by the passion he had for sport. He made his life’s work the pursuit of sporting excellence and inspired those around him to the same aspirations and standards.
It is for this reason that the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr. D.A.M Kgothule, committed the renaming of facilities in honor of this giant of sport in the Province and country.
The facilities to be renamed are as follows:
- The FSSSI Center of Boxing excellence – Bloemfontein
- The Kopano Indoor Sport Center – Welkom/Thabong
These facilities will be renamed as follows:
- Dick Nkuna Center of Sport Excellence
- Dick Nkuna Indoor Sport Centre
“By renaming these facilities, we honour Mr. Nkuna for the work he has done as a sport administrator for his contribution towards transforming sport in our country generally and province in particular. Such transformation has been central in the promotion of social cohesion and nation building in our country. His legacy will live on in the work done at these facilities that will carry his name”, stated MEC Kgothule.
The renaming will take place at a Media Briefing to be staged as follows:
