Department of Public Enterprises in partnership with the Free State government to host a rare educational youth camp tour

The Department of Public Enterprises together with the Free State Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DETEA) and the Department of Education will host 100 grade Maths and Science learners on a week-long Youth Camp, where they will tour State Owned Companies to expose and inspire them explore scarce skills such as technical and mechanical fields.

The pilot project by the two department is to ensure that grade 10 -11 learners have an opportune time to deliberate on such skills as part of the broader programme of the Government to ensure we grow the pool of scarce skills in the country.

The Deputy Minister Bulelani Magwanishe and the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Mosebenzi Zwane, in Partnership with the Department of Basic Education, will take the learners on a tour of SOC such as Eskom, Transnet, Denel, SAA, amongst others, where scarce skills such as electrical and mechanical engineers, artisans, technicians are in demand to implement the infrastructure development plans they are currently embarking upon.

These four state owned companies; Eskom, Denel, SAA and Transnet will provide an opportunity for the learners to participate on several experiential programmes designed to entice young minds into a myriad of critical and economic fields the myriad of careers available at the state owned companies.

The camp is sure to equip the learners with leadership qualities as well as life skills. It is hoped that once the youth camp, becomes a success and the learners feedback is positive, the project will be rolled out to other provinces.
