The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Mr DAM Kgothule is proud to announce that the community of Makholokoeng will receive a modular library, donated to the department by the CSX and Metrofile companies.
A Presidential visit to Makholokoeng and Diyatalawa on 4 October 2011, identified a dire need for a library in this area. The security company CSX came up with solutions insofar as the rendering of library services is concerned. The surveys showed that only approximately three new libraries can currently be built per province per year due to the huge financial layout of a new library.
The modular library concept proved to be a perfect solution: unlike the brick-and-mortar buildings, this library is prefabricated in a factory, reducing site meetings and inspections to a minimum. The library is designed to last up to 50 years and includes blinds, air conditioning, a toilet, a ramp for the disabled and a veranda. The donation also included furniture like book shelves, a quaint little lending desk, tables, chairs and display cabinets.
Comprising of 2 275 households, the rural area of Makholokoeng is situated near Tsiame in Harrismith. There is no other library within walking distance. This area is in dire need of services and the modular library put up at the Mapule Créche will make a huge difference. Every inch of the 56 square metres was utilised and the library will render all the services that a full-sized library offers: a lending service (both adult and children’s sections), a computer area with three computers providing Internet Access, e-mail facilities and word processing programs, a study area, a fully furnished toy library and access to periodicals and magazines.
