Department of Labour Director-General Nhleko to attend SASOM Summit in KZN to engage with stakeholders on problems bedevelling the Compensation Fund

The Department of Labour‘s (DoL) Director-General (DG) Nkosinathi Nhleko is to lead a high powered team of senior officials of the department and its public entity, the Compensation Fund - to attend the Summit of the South African Society of Occupational Medicine (SASOM), a professional body of medical practitioners - to dissect the problems bedeviling the Fund.

The Continuing Medical Education (CME) Summit hosted by the SASOM KwaZulu-Natal Chapter will be held under the topic: “Workman’s compensation in crisis: a summit to highlight the seriousness of the risks and look for possible solutions”.

The one-day summit on 15 March 2013 (Friday) will be held at the Oysterbox Hotel, Umhlanga. It will start at 13h00 to 19h00.

Expected to accompany Nhleko will be the Compensation Fund Commissioner Shadrack Mkhonto and the Fund’s management team.

The gathering will also be graced by speakers from SASOM; the Orthopaedic Association; the Pharmaceutical Association; Emergency Services; the Durban Chamber of Commerce; Cosatu; Solidarity; COMPSOL, providers of injury on duty management and processes; Rand Mutual Assurance; and the office of the Public Protector amongst others.  

A number of issues are expected to come up for discussion ranging from the workings of the Compensation for Occupation and Injuries Diseases Act; the medical industry outlook; emergency services’ response to the crisis; broader medical industry frustrations; possible solution to the problems.

The DG and the Commissioner would provide responses to the ‘crisis’.  A panel discussion would also be held later in the day on the way forward!
