Department of Justice to raise awareness against harmful religious practices in schools

As part of Child Protection Week campaign the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD) will host an event to raise awareness on harmful religious practises in schools. This event was prompted by various reports on violent religious practices especially in Gauteng schools. The event will be held in the community where two school boys were killed in a religious ritual.

Harmful practices (Religious and other Beliefs) go against the values and rights protected by the Constitution. The following harmful religious and occult-related practices have increased significantly in the communities:

  1. Vampirism and infringement of the Human Tissue Act, 1983 (Act 65 of 1983).
  2. Spiritual intimidation and coercion.
  3. Voodoo and other religious practices intended to cause harm.
  4. Murder/human sacrifice and mutilation.
