As part of the Child Protection Week, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development will host 500 school learners at Botshabelo, Free State, on Saturday 06 June 2015 to raise awareness on the legal consequences of cyber bullying and sexting. Learners will also be informed about justice services available for victims of cyber bullying and sexting like a Peace Order from the court against the perpetrator in terms of section 384 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
Cyber bullying and sexting are two relatively new phenomena that have emerged along with the increasing use of electronic communication technology. Cyber Bullying consists of interactions on social networking sites, websites, blogs etc. where the perpetrator behaves intentionally or unintentionally in a manner that causes harm to their victims. Sexting – ‘texting’ and ‘sex’ - involves the sending of nude or semi-nude photos or videos and/or sexually suggestive messages via mobile phone texting or instant messaging.
