The Department of International Relations and Cooperation to launch Humanitarian Trends Study in Southern Africa

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation in partnership with the Regional Inter-Agency Standing Committee Southern Africa will host the launch of the Humanitarian Trends in Southern Africa: Challenges and Opportunities report.

In order to have a clear understanding of southern Africa’s risk profile required for effective humanitarian planning, members of the Southern African Regional Inter-Agency Standing Committee (RIASCO) called for an investigation into the threats to lives and livelihoods likely to confront the region over the next decade, along with available capacities to address these challenges.

The research was carried out during 2012 by 33 researchers through four research hubs across southern Africa. These involved the University of Antananarivo (Madagascar), North-West University (South Africa), Stellenbosch University (South Africa), the Technical University of Mozambique, along with independent researchers in Lesotho, Malawi and South Africa.
