Department of Human Settlements Minister Connie September to handover houses in Alexandra

Human Settlements Minister Connie September will take part in a handover ceremony in Alexandra township, North East of Johannesburg.

Over 60 families will officially receive houses, especially built as part of collaboration between the Provincial Government’s disaster management unit, City of Johannesburg’s emergency management services and the non-profit organisation, Gift of the Givers Foundation.

The idea was to build structures that would be resilient to unpredictable disaster situations such as flooding. They are part of efforts to alleviate difficulties for residents in an informal section of Marlboro, along the banks of the Juskei River, not far from the Gautrain Station in Alexandra.

Apart from the families whose shacks were improved as part of marking this year’s Mandela Day, residents have accepted the project which they see as part of possible solutions to tackle the country’s housing shortage.

Minister September will be accompanied by the MEC for Human Settlements in Gauteng Ntombi Mekgwe. They would also be joined by various stakeholders from the provincial government, the City of Johannesburg, Gift of the Givers Foundation and Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

Members of the Media are cordially invited to the event to be held as follows:

Date: Friday, 11 October 2013
Time: 10h00
