Department hosts Kutlwanong holiday program for learners

With the school holidays well under way, it is sometimes difficult for learners to find something keep themselves busy with. Often young people find themselves attracted to activities that are detrimental to their health and lives, such as alcohol and drug abuse, gangsterism, unprotected sex and so on.

To avert these social ills the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is hosting a Holiday Program for learners and young people in general in Kutlwanong/ Odendaalsrus, under the theme “Reclaiming our streets”.

The program is taking the form of sporting as well as arts and culture activities being hosted at various venues and also a talent show for the youngsters to showcase their individual talents. The games are aimed at fully engaging young people in communities in various sporting activities promoting social cohesion.

The games started on 25 June 2013 and will cater for sporting codes such as Soccer, Volleyball (boys and girls), Basketball and Netball. A 4.9 km fun run will also be staged. The games are hosted at Rearabetsoe School as well as the open fields of Hunters, Aston Villa, Maeza and Kalkin.

The talent show will be hosted at loveLife Centre on 26 June and will include poetry, comedy and story-telling competition that will take place on 27 June.

From 1 to 14 July an arts and culture programme will be staged as follows:

  • 1 July: Drama competition
  • 2 July: Traditional dance competition
  • 4 July: Pantsula, Potjwa and Hip hop dance competition
  • 7 July: Spiritual music competition
  • 8 July: Gospel competition
  • 9 July: Traditional music competition
  • 10 July: Choral music competition
  • 11 July: Hip hop, House and Kwaito music competition
