Department hosts cultural competitions at Basotho Cultural Village (BCV)

Cultural competitions are hosted annually at Basotho Cultural Village (BCV) with the aim of empowering, educating and entertaining the youth through culture.

As a museum BCV is required to engage the community through these competitions and collect a database of cultural groups around the Free State Province for use when hosting cultural functions and when hosting media crews who request life performances on educational programmes. This programme complements the museum’s activities in promoting arts and culture, at the same time educating the youth about their cultural heritage.

The participants are school groups, community groups and youth clubs from around the Free State Province. Participating groups are required to render two songs of their choice and are categorized into junior, intermediate and senior sections based on their age.

The competitions will be in two forms: Monyanyako and Traditional Dance.

Monyanyako Competitions: 24 August 2013

Monyanyako refers to the cultural movement songs that were performed by choirs during weddings, concerts and when hosting traditional feasts. Monyanyako songs are popular amongst school children and young people and singers who themselves perform dance action.

Traditional Dance Competitions: 7 September 2013

Participating groups will be competing in the following genres:

  1. Mokgibo: Songs and dance performed by young women moving their shoulders imitating their work activities in the fields.
  2. Mohobelo: Song and dance by young men during the traditional feasts moving their feet in unique style/pattern.
  3. Zulu dance: Both girls and boys will be performing their Zulu dance remembering the past when hosting traditional feasts unifying the diverse cultures in the Free State.
  4. Tswana Dance: Girls and boys showcasing their vibrant Tswana dance
  5. Lipina tsa Mokopu: Performance by girls portraying their songs and dance during the harvesting time of Mokopu (pumpkin) during the African new year celebrations.

Both events will be held on 24 August and 7 September 2013, at the Basotho Cultural Village, starting at 9h00.
