The Department of Environmental Affairs hosts the National Climate Change Response Stakeholder Workshop

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) will host the National Climate Change Response Stakeholder Workshop in Benoni, Gauteng on 20 – 21 June 2013.

The multi-stakeholder workshop is being convened by DEA in an effort to facilitate a wider stakeholder consultation and engagement in the implementation of the National Climate Change Response Policy (NCCRP). It will provide an opportunity for in-depth discussions on progress to date on the implementation of the NCCRP.

The workshop also aims to provide an overview of the policy directives set out in NCCRP; facilitate discussions on planning, policy alignment and implementation elements of the policy; and expected end products. The workshop will also look at linkages between the national climate change response policy implementation, and the international climate change negotiations.

During the two-day workshop, a number of key climate change issues will be dealt with. These include an overview of the strategic approach to implementation of the National Climate Change Response Policy, the development of long term adaptation scenarios, as well as policy alignment to support climate change adaptation.

Discussions will also address the approach to implementation of the mitigation elements of the policy, as well as monitoring and evaluation of the impact of climate change response action. There will also be presentations on a toolkit aimed at integrating climate change risks and opportunities into municipal planning, approaches by local government to climate change adaptation/mitigation, as well as a presentation by provinces on their climate change response programmes, and lessons learnt.

Following the first day’s workshop discussions, there will be a media briefing. The briefing will, amongst others, allow the Department of Environmental Affairs to unpack the National Climate Change Response Policy and provide an update on its implementation.
