Department of Energy holds learners focus week

The Department of Energy (DoE) invites members of the media to cover the department’s Learners Focus Week Programme to be held at the University of Limpopo during the period 29 June 2014 to 4 July 2014. DoE will undertake this programme in partnership with the Provincial Department of Education and the SOEs, relevant private companies, sponsors and bursars to inform learners about the required skills in the Energy sector.

Government is concerned that skills shortages pose a significant limitation on the country’s long term economic growth potential. Global experience shows that the lack of required skills is one the most significant hindrances in developing viable economic opportunities as productivity is stalled.

This annual programme is dedicated at re-dressing the imbalances of the past, and to play a significant role in removing the barriers for the learners to enter into the various professions. The programme will also provide the learners with increased knowledge of energy efficiency and its benefits for sustainable development and poverty reduction.

The programme targets learners who are studying mathematics and science at High School Level to encourage them to take up technical subjects such as Science; Technology; Engineering; and Mathematics at Universities or Further Education and Training Centres.
