Department Basic Education Minister (DBE), Angie Motshekga, to host Mathematics, Science and Technology roundtable

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will lead a delegation of Mathematics, Science and Technology teachers and experts at a Roundtable on Friday, 7 June 2013 in Pretoria. The overall objective of the Roundtable is to strengthen the current National Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) strategy in order to produce a high impact Mathematics, Science and Technology Plan which would lead to concrete actions to improve learner performance.

Participating teachers were identified based on their track record of excellence in the teaching of Mathematics, Science and Technology, and the outstanding performance of their learners in the 2012 National Senior Certificate. Other participants will be the MST Ministerial Task Team, Provincial MST Coordinators and Heads of Curriculum from all Provinces.

“We were encouraged by the improvement in the performance of Grade 3 and Grade 6 learners in the 2012 Annual National Assessment (ANA) and in the in Grade 12 National Senior Certificate examinations in Mathematics but more can still be done, hence the need for experts in this field to come together and develop a solid Plan of effective Maths, Science and Technology teaching in our schools. The roundtable will also provide a framework for stakeholders to invest resources in the MST Plan”, said Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.
