Department of Arts and Culture, Association of Independent Record Companies and the SABC to hold a workshop to discuss music royalties distribution with stakeholders

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), Association of Independent Record Companies (AIRCO) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will hold a workshop in Polokwane, Limpopo province to discuss music royalties distribution with stakeholders from the province.

The DAC, AIRCO and SABC entered into an agreement to work together with the objective of assisting musician’s access their royalties on time and in a fair manner in cases where these royalties are due.  The agreement will provide the record companies and musicians with all necessary information required for them to claim their royalties and improve distribution of their products.

The three parties have since agreed to embark on a roadshow to inform stakeholders in all provinces about the agreement and how it will work. It is hoped that the roadshows will assist efforts to encourage musicians to take advantages of the economic development potential of their sector and address issues of access, redress, transformation and participation in the creation and distribution of music. The agreement also means that the SABC will have access to more local music videos.
