Correctional Services partners with Mossel Bay Local Municipality and Meals on Wheels to commemorate World Food Day, 19 Oct

DCS collaborates to better communities

As part of contributing towards the successful reintegration of offenders back into society, the Department of Correctional Services has partnered with the Mossel Bay Local Municipality and Meals on Wheels to commemorate the World Food Day under the theme: “The role of backyard gardens and skills development to ensure food security and economic growth”, in the community of Mossel Bay on 19 October 2023.

The main objective of the partnership between the three organizations aims to provide a meal to the impoverished households, parolees, probationer, victims of crime and people with disabilities through the establishment of own backyard food gardens and community food gardens. Beneficiaries will be provided with training, mentorship, helping them find markets for trading, business skills training and further be provided with confectionery and pizza making skills amongst others.,

The event forms part of the efforts by the DCS to address some of the issues impacting on the successful reintegration of offenders back into society such as stigmatization, unemployment, poverty, alienation to socio-economic opportunities due to stigma of a criminal record and many others, which may contribute towards unsafe communities.
