The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is to host a Men’s Engagement Session on 19 August 2023 at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape Province, in an effort to eradicate the high rate of crime against women and children in the area.
This is a follow-up session emanating from a community imbizo held on 12 July 2023 which brought to the fore a harrowing state of abuse faced by women at the hands of men. These include sexual assaults, rape cases and other forms of gender-based violence. The community felt that law enforcement agencies were not attending to their cries.
The National Commissioner for Correctional Services, Mr Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale made a commitment in July that the department will revert back to specifically address men in the area of Lusikisiki.
Various stakeholders such as the National House of Traditional and Khoi San Leaders, the National Prosecuting Authority, South African Police Service, Department of Social Development, Heads of Initiation Schools and many others, are expected to join the engagement session.
