Commission for Gender Equality visits police stations and the courts in KwaZulu-Natal, 27 to 29 Jun

CGE undertakes visits to police stations and the courts in KwaZulu-Natal to assess compliance in providing services to victims and survivors of gender-based violence

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will conduct oversight and monitoring visits to two police stations in KwaZulu-Natal province, as part of its programme to assess compliance by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in providing required services for victims and survivors of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). This programme started two years ago, and a report has been produced. The CGE will continue to monitor if the findings of the initial report are being implemented.

Commissioners from the CGE will also visit the Dundee Magistrate’s Court to monitor the deliverance of justice to a learner who was allegedly raped by a school teacher. Over the years, the CGE has noted the public outcry over the handling of rape cases by state entities and the slow pace of the criminal justice system in protecting GBV victims.

The findings from these oversight visits will be presented to the National Police Commissioner and the Portfolio Committees on Police and Justice and Correctional Services for interventions where poor service delivery is found. The efficiency of state entities in the criminal justice system is critical in ensuring a South Africa free of gender inequality and GBVF.

Commissioners from the CGE will visit the following stations and court.
