North West Provincial Legislature to appear before the CGE as part of the investigation into workplace harassment, bullying, sexism and violence against women
On 15 October 2026, the North West Provincial Legislature will be appearing before the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) as part of the investigation into workplace harassment, bullying, sexism and violence within legislatures.
The investigation started in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, respectively, in September 2026, with an assessment of the administrative environment within these Provincial Legislatures, and the CGE examining the institutional systems, practices and workplace dynamics within the administration.
As part of the investigation, both the Speaker and the Secretariat of the North West Provincial Legislature will appear before the CGE to provide information on the Legislature’s policies, practices and mechanisms for promoting gender equality and ensuring a safe and dignified workplace.
The investigation will examine concerns relating to bullying, harassment, intimidation, sexual harassment, sexism, abuse of authority, retaliation and barriers to reporting, as well as the adequacy of institutional mechanisms for prevention, reporting, investigation and accountability.
The CGE’s intervention seeks to look beyond individual incidents and assess whether the Legislature’s institutional culture, systems and accountability structures effectively protect employees and promote gender equality.
The investigation forms part of the CGE’s constitutional mandate to promote and protect gender equality and monitor measures taken by public institutions to advance gender equality.
