Gender transformation hearings in the public health sector
In accordance with the powers outlined in the CGE Act 39 of 1996 as amended, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will conduct Gender Transformation Hearings in the Public Health Sector from 12 – 14 December 2023.
The Head of the Department of Health in the Eastern Cape together with the CEOs of Frere Hospital & Cecilia Makhiwane Hospital, Dora Ngiza Hospital & Livingston Hospital and St Elizabeth Hospital & Bhisho Hospital will be appearing before the Commission for Gender Equality to account for their institutions’ compliance with international obligations and commitments, and national policy and institutional frameworks on gender equality, as reported in the various reports in regard to their institutions.
These hearings are intended to, among other things:
- Assess the extent to which health sector strategies meet human rights standards and principles, including gender equality in healthcare service delivery within the identified institutions, and promote them.
- Determine whether current health sector strategies are consistent with, and promote, human rights standards and principles, including gender equality, in the delivery of healthcare services.
- Ensure that effective relevant and strategic healthcare interventions can be implemented in these identified hospitals, identify gaps and opportunities related to gender equality and human rights.
- Identify and assess gaps and opportunities related to gender equality and human rights within these identified hospitals, in order to facilitate effective relevant and strategic healthcare interventions.
