Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) Commissioner and Staff to observe proceedings in the case of Ms Motsage

Mr. Wallace Mgoqi, the Northern Cape Commissioner of the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) together with the entire office of the Commission in the Northern Cape will on 9 January 2013 attend the court proceedings in the Hartswater area. This case is as a result of the untimely and unfortunate death of Ms Gabaediwe Motsage allegedly at the hands of nurses/mentors.

Her death came at the time wherein the Commission was busy raising awareness and advocating for the eradicating of all gender-based violence (GBV) in our society.

The Commission will be monitoring the case as part of its mandate in ensuring the gender-based violence and other related abuses are highlighted and addressed.  In part, this mission is intended to offer solidarity to the victims of GBV, particularly those that allegedly suffered due to wrong cultural practices that are not meant to safeguard the lives of initiates but to harm them.

The CGE condemns this incident and calls upon other stakeholders in joining the Commission in court, thus making unequivocal statement that acts of gender-based violence cannot be tolerated in our society.
