Grandparents are the custodians of our memories, cultures and traditions of our families. Investing in our memory bank is about investing in the relationships we have with our grandparents. Therefore to honour our Grandparents a special event hosted by the Premier of the Northern Cape Ms Sylvia Lucas and the MEC for Social Development Ms Tiny Chotelo will be held for them on the 6 October 2013 in Groblershoop at the Nuwehoop Service Centre at 10h00.
The theme for grandparent’s day 2013 is “investing in our memory bank”. A plea is made for young people to cherish the intimate and special memories shared with their grandparents by visiting them, making a phone call or doing something good to the grandparents.
Grandparents Day has a threefold purpose which are:
- To honor grandparents.
- To afford grandparents an opportunity to show love for their grandchildren.
- To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older persons can offer.
Grandparent’s day should be observed as a family day where schools, churches and organisations honor grandparents with special events. Some families enjoy small, private gatherings and others celebrate it by holding family reunions where games are played by young children and as such enhances “intergenerational interaction”.
It is also a day where grandparents are allowed to relate stories of their past, enlightening children about the olden days. It is the time to enhance communication between the generations. Together, adults and youth can reach out to discuss how the many challenges facing future generations from literacy to health and wellness to financial stability.
Most important point to remember is to not forget those older persons in old age homes who are unable to be with their families or have no families.
Grandparent’s day acknowledges the vital role that grandparents play in our society, both as custodians and providers of care, love and guidance to their children and grandchildren. It is a day that recognizes the irreplaceable role grandparents have in their families and in the wider community.
The community of the Northern Cape is urged to celebrate the grandparents day with their elders in the same vain that Mothers and Fathers Day is celebrated.
