Municipal ward by-elections will take place in eight provinces namely Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape and Western Cape on Wednesday, 7 November 2012.
A total of 15 vacant wards will be contested by 50 candidates of whom three (3) are independent candidates and the rest represent 12 political parties.
One (1) by-election will take place in the Eastern Cape:
- Ward 21 in Intsika Yethu [Cofimvaba] Municipality – EC135 will be contested by Gloria Nontembiso Baleka of the African National Congress; and Pumzile Simon Dyabhaza of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
Four (4) by-elections will take place in the Gauteng:

Ward 28 in Mogale City [Krugersdorp] Municipality – GT481 will be contested by Martin van Eck of the African Christian Democratic Party; Ramatsobane Francina Mahlangu of the African National Congress; and Richard Lees of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Ward 10 in Randfontein [Randfontein] Municipality – GT482 will be contested by Shadean Stanley Butler of the African National Congress; Lena Klaaste of the Congress of the People; Sarah Magdeline Bock of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Ward 58 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB will be contested by Muhammad Yousuf Cajee of the African National Congress; Ebrahim Sarang of AL JAMA-AH; Vida Lorette Minnaar of the Congress of the People; Osman Cassiem of the Democratic Alliance; Marcelle Caroline Lemour of the National Freedom Party; Stephen Katz of the South African Progressive Civic Organisation. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
- Ward 8 in Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality – TSH will be contested by Dumisani Ezekiel Ndlazi of the African Christian Democratic Party; Eugenia Moetedi Thobejane of the African National Congress; Reggy Mandla Mabuza of the Congress of the People; Nickey Ngobeni of the Democratic Alliance; Gerald Chere Malapile of the Movement Democratic Party; Rosina Mosima Mmamma Khoza of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
Four (4) by-elections will take place in Kwazulu-Natal:

Ward 4 in Hibiscus Coast [Port Shepstone] Municipality – KZN216 will be contested by Khayelihle Registone Shinga of the African National Congress; Ndabo David Zulu of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Zipho Simphiwe Yeni of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Ward 1 in Umtshezi [Escourt] Municipality – KZN234 will be contested by Bongani Sunset Dladla of the African National Congress; Thokozani Mandlenkosi Majola of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Sabelo Reginald Hadebe of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Ward 8 also in Umtshezi [Estcourt] Municipality – KZN234 will be contested by Zwela Zwane of the African National Congress; Gwaja Khumalo of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Nkosiyapha Penuel Nxumalo of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
- Ward 14 in Nqutu [Nqutu] Municipality – KZN242 will be contested by Abel Emmanuel Sithembiso Buthelezi of the African National Congress; Sipho Randles Nyamane of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Besta Ntombikayise Nkosi of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
One (1) by-election will take place in Limpopo:
- Ward 9 in Aganang [Moletji/ Matlala] Municipality – LIM352 will be contested by Pitsi Matthews Makweya of the African National Congress; and David Noko Phago of the Congress of the People. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
Two (2) by-elections will take place in Mpumalanga:
- Ward 4 in Mkhondo [Piet Retief] Municipality – MP303 will be contested by Goodness Thembelihle Nkosi of the African National Congress; Bheki Joseph Msibi of the National Freedom Party; and Ntombifuthi Eunice Khumalo of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
- Ward 1 in Mbombela [Nelspruit] Municipality – MP322 will be contested by Lokhithi Petrus Shabalala, an independent candidate; Madayizi Bility Mokoena of the African National Congress; and Carriot Nwahobo Mthethwa of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
One (1) by-election each will take place in North West and the Northern Cape:

Ward 33 in Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality – NW373, North West, will be contested by Michael Mogomotsi Molefe, and independent candidate; Fundisile Ngqinelo of the African National Congress; Nomawetu Xilongwana of the Congress of the People; and Molefe Jacob Victor Raikane of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
- Ward 10 in Ga-Segonyana [Kuruman] Municipality – NC452, Northern Cape, will be contested by Opadile Nelson Hantise, an independent candidate; Mothusi Joseph Dichabe of the African National Congress; Oarabeng Engeline Mfondini of the Democratic Alliance; and Abegail Rudisang Morolong of the United Christian Democratic Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
One (1) by-election will take place in the Western Cape:
- Ward 2 in Matzikama [Vredendal] Municipality – WC011 will be contested by Delina Susan Goedeman of the African National Congress and Johan Alexander of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
Voting hours are from 7h00 to 21h00 except for Ward 21 in Intsika Yethu [Cofimvaba] Municipality – EC135, Eastern Cape, where voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 19h00.
A total of 82 919 voters are registered in the 15 wards and 70 voting districts where by-elections will take place.
