With thrilling encounters witnessed this past weekend in the regional finals, the same level of enthusiasm will be expected to ensue at Provincial Indigenous Games scheduled for 28 June 2014 at Westonaria Sport Complex.
The provincial indigenous games will feature the best performers selected at cluster level and also serve as a platform to select a team to represent Gauteng in the National Indigenous games planned for September, later this year.
In their 14th edition, the Indigenous Games coincide with South Africa's 20 years of democracy observed under the theme: 'Celebrating 20 years of Democracy through heritage'.
Participants will have the chance to vie in sporting codes such as Lintoga, Diketo, Dibeke and Morabaraba among others, to earn their place in the final team to represent Gauteng in the national games.
Provincially organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the Indigenous Games are aimed at attracting the attention of the youth away from social evils, by promoting healthy lifestyle amongst the youth and also enhancing mass participation in sports amongst communities in Gauteng.
"We are enthralled by the increased participation in these games that serve to unite communities and uphold the authenticity of being South African. Aware of this, we commit to continue supporting this games that are essential for preserving our cultural practices and equally important for shaping shared values in communities," says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Molebatsi Bopape.
