The Department of Basic Education in partnership with Spell It South Africa will launch the Spelling Bee South Africa Competition for 2015 at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg on Thursday, 16th April 2015. Spell It has been one of the Department of Basic Education’s Spelling Bee original implementing partners since 2013.
The Spelling Bee concept originated many years ago in the United States of America and is about the glory of being able to overcome the complexities of words that makes one a champion speller. The overall objective of the competition is to stimulate an interest amongst learners in learning languages and other subjects that will broaden their horizons.
Spelling Bee South Africa is part of a broader comprehensive strategy to address the poor performance by learners in languages and numeracy, as shown by the Annual National Assessments (ANA) results. These results reflected poor learner comprehension and performance, not only in Language, but also in Numeracy and Mathematics. Spelling Bee South Africa contributes to learners’ ability to read and write competently.
