Department of Basic Education partners with Woolworths to celebrate 2019 World School Milk Day in Khayelitsha

Department of Basic Education (DBE) in collaboration with Woolworths will on Wednesday, 11 September 2019, celebrate the annual World School Milk Day (WSMD) at Masiphumelele Primary School in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. The 2019 WSMD will be celebrated under the theme “Dairy gives you go”.

The WSMD is an initiative of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) which started in 2000. It has become an annual event held in many countries throughout the world. DBE marked WSMD for the first time in 2016 and continues, through the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP), to join other nations to mark this day.

The NSNP is the Department’s flagship programme which supports quality teaching and learning by providing daily cooked nutritious meals to 9.7 million learners nationwide in 21 274 public primary, secondary and special schools.

The Woolworths Education Programme is bringing a special health and fitness programme which includes a health track that will specifically focus on exercises that will assist with bone strength and density; as well as a class lesson on nutrition which will hone in on the benefits of milk and the role that calcium plays in the body.  They will also distribute meal packs with milk to all learners.

In provinces, WSMD will be celebrated with various Dairy Companies/Milk Processors organised by DBE, Milk Producers Organisation (MPO) and Woolworths. Consumer Education Project of Milk South Africa (CEP) will distribute an educational kit for educators that comprises of Teacher Guides for Grades 1 - 3 and for Grades 4 – 7, which provide information on the relevant topics and includes worksheets for learners to reinforce the messages.
