Arts and Culture supports Indigenous Food Competition

The National Department of Arts and Culture in collaboration with the IndiZA Foods Company will host the South African Indigenous Food Competition. This grand finale will take place on Saturday, 11 May at AB Phokombe High School, Mohlakeng, at Randfontein, Johannesburg.

Experts in various indigenous foods will prepare several dishes and drinks with the help of students as part of skills transfer. The chosen finalists are scheduled to showcase their menus on the day at which the national winner will be selected.

The Department of Arts and Culture aims to collect, document and create awareness of the food heritage of the country. One of our goals is to compile an indigenous food recipe book. Global food trends show that consumers are becoming more health conscious and are therefore seeking natural food products which are more nutritious and with tangible health benefits. Indigenous foods have the potential to be developed to meet these requirements and penetrate the global market using innovative technologies to improve the quality and packaging.

The recognition and utilisation of these indigenous products will have a positive impact on people’s health; boost the creative economy and tourism sectors as well as Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME). The SMME sector is vital for economic growth and job creation. It is for these reasons that DAC mandated IndiZA Foods to organise the Indigenous Food Competition at schools that offer Consumer Studies as a subjects in various provinces.

This initiative is in line with the department’s vision of promoting and preserving the rich and diverse indigenous food and heritage of the country.
