Arts and Culture supports the Launch of ‘Mama, I Want the Black That You Are’, a theatre production based on albinism

The Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with Molepo Theatre Projects will today, 4 May 2018 launch the tour of a theatre production called, ‘Mama, I Want the Black That You Are,’  at the Joburg Theatre in Gauteng. Minister Nathi Mthethwa is expected to deliver a keynote address at the launch.

Presented by Molepo Theatre Projects in association with ‘Nkgo Ya Metsi’, ‘Mama, I Want the Black That You Are’ is a compelling theatre production based on interviews and real lives of people living with albinism. This theatre production is a captivating tale of a family with a dark past.

Matlakala, the central character, is a 15-year-old teenager living with Albinism, haunted by a life of abuse and the secrets she has to keep from everyone, including her mother.

Through this character, the production highlight the plight and struggle faced by people with albinism prompted by traditional beliefs and taboos. Myths and beliefs pepper the production, drawing attention to the challenges that people living with Albinism and their families have to face.

NB: The production will tour nine provinces, with performances at approximately 15 schools per province in different regions.
