Arts and Culture launches 5th Creative Arts Incubator Programme in Gauteng

The Acting Director-General of Arts & Culture, Mr Vuyo Jack will launch the 5th Creative Arts Incubators Programme under the theme Arts Empowered to continue to give impetus on the importance of community development using the creative industries. The launch will be held on Friday, 12 June 2015 at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.

The objective of the programme is to provide a platform for the sector to obtain training and skills, create employment and empower artists maintain stable income and participation in the economy. This will also enable the sector to develop and measure the output of locally developed content in terms of music, artworks, films, arts and craft and stage productions amongst other artistic disciplines.

The incubator programme is part of the implementation of the Department of Arts & Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy strategy that aims to unleash the economic potential of the arts through large scale investment. This will be achieved by utilising the creative industries to grow an inclusive economy, build skills and promote active citizenry, leadership and partnerships. The Department of Arts & Culture will establish an Arts Incubator Fund that will support the growth of the local arts industry. Through this Fund we will invest in the early stages of an artist’s development by providing market exposure to their products.

“The programme will take the artist through a 10 000 hour professional development journey that will expose the artist to product creation and development, feedback and ultimately, introduction to the industry. This will allow the artist to develop from an apprentice level to professional and be the masters in the trade,” said Mr Vuyo Jack.

To date, the Department has launched 4 incubators and 408 individuals have benefited so far. The incubators were launched in Mpumalanga at Caster Bridge Academy; Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (PACOFS); Artscape in the Western Cape and the State Theatre in Pretoria.
