Arts and Culture hosts Social Cohesion Report-Back Summit, 30 Mar

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa will convene a Social Cohesion Report-Back Summit to afford the nation a platform to review progress on the implementation of the July 2012 National Social Cohesion Summit resolutions. The summit will be held on Monday, 30 March 2015 at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape Province.

The 2012 National Social Cohesion Summit held in Kliptown provided a platform for individuals, organisations and communities from all sectors of society to discuss and map a way-forward in creating a caring and proud society. The Summit culminated in the adoption of a declaration with 12-point resolutions in which the 11th resolution committed that a National Social Cohesion Report-Back Summit be convened in 2014/15 financial year to coincide with the celebration of 20 years of freedom and democracy.

Cabinet approved a macro-social strategic framework on the implementation of campaigns and programmes to address issues that negatively affected the realisation of social cohesion and social justice in South Africa. The issues that were identified were poverty, unemployment, racism, xenophobia, intolerance, and other symptoms of underdevelopment. It was for this reason that the Social Cohesion Summit was held in 2012 to discuss and recommend interventions to enhance Nation Building and Social Cohesion. All sectors of society committed to work towards the achievement of the Summit’s resolutions. The Report-Back Summit is intended to review the implementation of the resolutions.
