Arts and Culture hosts a panel discussion on freedom and democracy, 19 Apr

Arts and Culture to host a panel discussion on freedom and democracy, with a particular focus on the values of Tata Mandela and Mama Sisulu

The Department of Arts and culture in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Museum will host a Panel discussion on freedom and democracy, through critical interrogation of the biographies of Mandela and Mme Sisulu. The panel discussion will offer a dialogic platform for critical reflection on (a) the journey and pain in the road to freedom, (b) some of the notable gains made since the advent of freedom and democracy in 1994 (c) some of the faultlines of the current constitutional democratic project, and (d) and how these faultlines could be mitigated. The discussion will take place on Thursday, 19 April 2018 at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Eastern Cape.

The Panel discussion forms part of the 2018 Freedom Month celebrations under the theme: “The Year of Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela: towards full realisation of our freedom and democracy through radical socio-economic transformation”. The celebrations coincide with the centenary of the late first black President of South Africa, Tata Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, a heroine of the liberation Struggle. Both Mandela and Mme Sisulu helped lay the foundation of our current constitutional democratic order; hence it would be necessary that there is a singular recognition of the role they played during this month as the country appropriately marks Freedom Month.

The panel of speakers will among others include: Dr Brigalia Bam (former Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission and Ms Yaa Ashantewaa Archer-Ngidi (the Executive Director of the Institute for Afrikology at the Durban University of Technology). Both Dr Bam and Ms Archer-Ngidi are Social Cohesion Advocates.
