Arts and Culture Deputy Minister, Joe Phaahla, to speak at the Big fish School of Digital Filmmaking Celebrations

Arts and Culture Deputy Minister, Joe Phaahla, will give a keynote address during the Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking celebrations. The celebrations will take place under theme “Gauteng through the Eyes and the Minds of young Filmmakers”. The purpose of this occasion is to celebrate the achievement and success of the Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking.

In collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) under the Investing In Culture (IIC) programme, the Big Fish was one of the 2006 flagship projects with three year funding totalling R9 Million. This relationship was initiated to create opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals to gain skills and employment in the film and TV industry.

To date, over 800 full time students have been trained with 85% employment rate achieved, while the remaining 15% is mainly comprised of those working on their own projects. The project has benefited historically disadvantaged students who were unable to raise funding for studies.

The Big Fish has received a number of key accolades including the ABSA CSI flagship project on entrepreneurship; Cape Film Commission (CFC) preferred training provider and various international accolades. Amongst other institutions, it has also worked with National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). The DAC is proud to have provided seed funding for an initiative which proved to be a resounding success. Members of the media are invited.
