The Department of Arts and Culture will commence with Social Cohesion Community Conversations on Wednesday, 10 September 2014, at Bethlehem Town Hall in Free State Province.
The conversations follow the official launch of the Nation Building and Social Cohesion Community Conversations by Mr Sibusiso Xaba, the Director General of the Department of Arts and Culture, last week in Bloemfontein. The Launch was hosted under the theme “Transforming Society, Uniting the Country’’.
Government hosted the National Social Cohesion Summit in 2012 at Kliptown, Johannesburg. Conscious of the need for more engagements, government decided to intensify the hosting of dialogues and community conversations throughout the country in line with the summit resolutions.
These Community Conversations are intended to serve as platforms for South Africans to discuss, strategise and develop programmes that are specific to their own localities in forging national unity and a cohesive society.
These planned community conversations are also aimed at ensuring that the resolutions of the first National Summit on Social Cohesion held in 2012 are embraced and supported by all South African communities. The dialogues will therefore, seek to mobilise community structures to work with government and to promote inclusive communities, nation building, and a more cohesive society.
This session is one of 30 community conversations which the Department of Arts and Culture, in partnership with other spheres of government and communities, will organise across all Provinces before the end of this year. In an effort to promote active citizenship, the discussions are planned to be in the form of intergenerational dialogues.
